The Rotterdam Design Prize 2013 is a joint project of Stichting Designprijs Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Het Nieuwe Instituut. Nominations are given to exemplary projects, products and research that have been important for the development of design over the past two years.
Dutch designer Winde Rienstra is one of the nominees. Jurymember Carlo Wijnands on the designer: “I nominate Winde for her shoe projects, which manifest individualistic material choices, a perfect sense of detail and a penchant for artisanal experimentation. Each design stands on its own, is wearable, and functions as jewellery for the feet.
Winde has produced five collections so far. Handcraft and artisanship are clearly visible in all her work and in her collections she consistently plays with three-dimensionality. Everyday materials like cardboard and bamboo are used in a constructional way, working with their individual characteristics and often leaving them unprocessed.
Lady Gaga was spotted wearing her Lego heels from her 2013 summer collection in London. I’ve seen several of her collection presentations during Amsterdam Fashion Week, and was holding my breath from time to time when models walked on her designs. Due to this situation her collection stayed unnoticed which was a shame.
