Jean-Paul Lespagnard: Dutch touch!

One designer I was really looking forward to see during Paris Fashion Week was Belgium fashiondesigner Jean-Paul Lespagnard. In 2008 Jean-Paul already drew the eye of the international fashion scene when he won two awards at the International Fashion Festival in Hyères (France), which led to the creation of a capsule collection for the French brand 123. In March 2011, he presented his first women’s ready-to- wear collection during Paris Fashion Week. Last Monday he presented his fifth ready-to-wear collection: ‘Maatjes’.

Keynote: the show was about Holland! Jean-Paul was inspired by the Dutch traditional fisher woman and the pop universe of motorcross. All the clothing reflected optimism and richness of the Dutch culture: foulards, ear warmers, scarves, pendants, eco-lanterns and off course motor cycle helmets.

I truly love his unique vision on fashion, he’s not afraid to play with themes, materials and silhouets. Like Suzy Menkes said after visiting his Spring 2013 collection presentation: “Jean-Paul has has that rare mix of a driven imagination, absolute clarity and a sense that clothes are there to wear.” I cannot agree more…
